New build & Advices - New to Truenas

Hi,

I’m currently planning to exit Synology i was using since almost 15 years … like a ton a people i suppose

I’m running a small home lab with plenty if dockers (plex, jelly, nginx, some IA and various tools…) as well as having a mail server for 3 domains. Backups offsite using synology C2 (and a second nas).

I’m looking for a good system able to manage all classic NAS stuff + my dockers, run VMs … as leaving synology i will have to run more custom applications (VM for mailcow, a nextcloud or equiv, …).

I’m looking for TrueNAS or Unraid … i was close to move on unraid but searching it seems TrueNAS will offer me more control, more security (zfs) and i don’t really need to run mismatch drive size. Seems also that TrueNAS will be hard on me on the beginning but seems the community is great

To date my Syno array is 3x16 To SHR-2 (2 drives can fail). The SHR-2 seems overkill but I was planning long term with the option to expand the array with another 4th drive. So i’m planning a raidZ-2.

Here is the setup i’m thinking of … am i missing something ? Doing an error ?

  • CPU : Intel i5 12400 (or 12500)
  • MB : ASRock B760 Pro RS
  • RAM : Textorm 2x32go
  • Case : Jonsbo N5
  • Drive : Exos / Ironwolf pro
  • System storage : nvme 128 go
  • HBA : Supermicro 9300-8I 12Gbps HBA IT mode
  • Power : something like a 750w 80PLUS Titanium

Extensions

  • I will add a 10gb network card, probably SFP+
  • I’m also looking at a HBA LSI 9300-16I …
  • Possible i’m adding a GPU for AI but maybe you will advice me run that outside a nas

Some questions :

  • intel 1700 motherboard seems to have some limitation on pcie (asus for example have a “bifurcation”). Am I missing something critical here because i’m
  • Can i use the system storage for application / dockers ? If yes the system storage will be increased at 2to … if not, separate drive.

Thanks a lot !
