New build on supermicro

Hello, i plan to build my first ECC/Xeon Truenas system.
I wonder if supermicro’s X11SCA Motherboard is ok for what i need.

I usually install truenas core on 2x M2
raidz1 on 3 or 4 mechanical drives.
and a mirrored SSD for vms.
with 64GB ram.

Going to serve a small office running 2 win 11 vms, 1 network backup app and samba shares.

I’d love to hear from you, before i place my order. tnx

I’d be careful with RAIDZ1 in a business context. If the drives are large enough, which they most likely are, I would go for RAIDZ2.

What drives do you have in mind? SMR is a no-go.

A boot drive mirror is not absolutely necessary. At least it should be clear that an automatic fail-over will probably not work. The benefit, if it’s worth it to you, is that the configuration and encryption keys are not lost, if you forgot your backup.

And you have a proper backup strategy, right?

X11SCA is officially a workstation board; it’s certainly capable as a server, but the proper server boards are X11SCL/X11SCM/X11SCH, or their equivalent from other manufacturers.
The issue is availability, and AsRock Rack E3C246D4U boards (esp. the D4U2-2T variant) may have the edge here.

Thank you for your reply,

Yes, RAIDZ2 is the way to go, since there are 8 SATA ports.
I use WD red+ disks.
Maybe raidz2 of 5x2TB drives.
2xSSD mirrored
and last slot will have a 6TB drive not spinning.

-Every night system will run a replication task of pool A (raidz2) to pool B( single drive).Thats the plan for local backup.
-Some critical files will be rsynced to remote server via internet.

What about that onboard raid controller?will that be a problem?

Which onboard RAID controller? Just set the chipset to AHCI, and ignore its alternate “RAID mode”.

For 6 TB you can perhaps even consider SSDs.
