New drive won't appear to be used as spare

Hi All,
I’ve added my first spare drive, and it won’t appear as available. The drive initially appeared as I’d expected, with the error about “Drive Integrity Feature.” I ran an sg_format successfully, and from that point on, the drive appears in the list of disks. It’s listed as n/a in Pools. I tried re-running sg_format, which also succeeded, and here I am.

The drive is not listed as Available on the Storage tab. It does not appear as available to add as a spare in the Pool wizard.

How do I get it from whatever limbo it’s in, to becoming a ready-to-use spare?

I have added a 2nd drive to be a spare. Both have been successfully sg_formatted via SSH, and both are completely unavailable for any use.

Do I just return them and forever hold the risk of resilvering time as the cost of using ZFS?

I’m sorry, but for some reason I can’t identify what drive you’re actually having trouble with.
Can you please point it out among the hardware you listed?

A smartctl -a on the drive(s) could also be useful.

Thank you NeoFusion for your reply. There is no command “smartctl” from either SSH or shell. Is it part of a package that isn’t included?

I now have 2 ST2000LM007 1R81 drives that show every sign of being ready-to-use, but not listed as Available to be added in any part of the GUI.

Freshly formatted, showing full details and SMART statistics, showing “n/a” for pool membership, and there’s nothing I can do with them. (They have both been powered-down after formatting.)

Try prefixing it with sudo like so sudo smartctl -a /dev/### instead.
Where ### is the device name the drive currently has, for example sda or sdg.

smartctl is already installed by default, just not available to the truenas_admin user.

It may also be a good idea to run sudo sg_readcap /dev/### to see what sg_utils thinks of the drives now.

Please post the output formatted using the </> button in the message pane toolbar.

Your drives are both using 528 byte block size. That’s not going to work in TrueNAS.
512 or 4K would.

What did your sg_format command look like?

sg_format --format --ffmt=1 --size=4096 /dev/sdx

After running sg_format --format --size=512 on /dev/sdk. It still does not appear as available for any purpose.

May be worth powering down (fully cut power) and and back up, just to clear out anything transient related to the drives.

I’ll try this tomorrow: I’ve started a --format --size=512 on /dev/sdL.

Though I have pulled each drive after formatting, with no success; then again, the block-size has apparently never changed until now.

Steps:
From an SSH session:
sudo sg_format --format --size=512 /dev/sd_
(Will take many, many hours. If you do lose connection, it might keep running in the background. To see the progress, if it is, use:
sudo sg_turs -p /dev/sd_

Reboot the entire system.
(WTF?)
Visit Storage page and bask in the new, unused drives appearing. Add these spares from that Storage page through means I have forgotten in a mere 15 minutes. My powers of anti-recollection are galactic.
