New hardware suggestion

Hello to all,

Until now i have use synology as fileservers.

I want to try truenas. The case is:

Company around 80 users, i want to use as fileserver, and as veeam target for backup the vms, and other host pc (scada).

I looking only brand new hardware. I have see Dell t350. Dell support told me that hba355i is non-raid. Does anyone have try hba355i if it works with truenas?

If there is any other suggestion for brand new hardware , don’t hesinate

Thanks!

Personally from my experience the 3008 chip is rock solid on TrueNAS in whatever form you wish to use it. I’m sure there will be other suggestions but having used it in many builds for many years in my organisation it’s been brilliant and given the controller is such a key component make sure you get the best one you can and by best I mean most compatible and most used TrueNAS hours.

PS: I specifically use the 9300-8e as I attach JBODs to Server Heads.

is this 9300-8e compatible with dell t350? can connect with hard disks?

Another server i have see, is

LENOVO Server ThinkSystem ST650 V2

RAID ThinkSystem RAID 930-8i 2GB Flash PCIe 12Gb Adapter

is this compatible with truenas?

It will work with any server that has a PCI-E slot. But remember the e stands for external if you are working with drives within one chassis then you either want the i version or an onboard controller 3008.

I’m only going to speak about the 3008 as that’s what I’ve largely used. Other members can suggest other options.

Point you towards the documentation section since you didn’t specifiy Core or Scale version.
https://www.truenas.com/docs/

I think you need to review your requirements, how much storage you require during the service life of this NAS server, how ZFS works and the different versions for disk and pool setup. Mirrors, Z1, Z2, etc.

Have you considered iX Systems? https://www.ixsystems.com/

it’s pcie slot, but the cable that connect to the disk trays? does it fit?

8 x 4tb is the plan in my mind. i think scale it’s fits me.

About z1, or z2, i am reading this now. Does this option affects the hardware choice?

Heh.

I was going to say, no, the E stands for Express.

But then I realised you were referring to 8i vs 8e

Anyway, made me giggle, so maybe it’ll make you

I could have worded it better I’ll give you that

If i buy t350 dell and an lsi 9300-16 does this card connect to the dell try disks?

You really need to go through the guides and see if the Dell T350 meets requirements and recommendations. Some Dell disk controllers work, some have to be flashed to ‘IT mode’ and others, RAID only, are not a fit for TrueNAS.
LSI 9300-16 comes in at least two models. 9300-16i (internal disks) and 9300-16e (external disks, like an disk expansion bay)

Your choice of eight 4TB drives in a Z2 configuration will give you about 24TB. Eight drives - two parity drives) That would be best between Z1 and Z2 as you can lose two drives and the pool still works but replace failed drives right away.

If you needed more storage space when set up the eight drives Z2 configuration, you would need to add another 8 drive Z2 set.

You also need to keep the pool free space at least 20% for regular use
50% or more free space is recommended for block type storage.

You need to take all that into account when designing the system and along with your current data growth rate. If your storage was all block type, would you be okay with 12TB for the next 5 to 7 years? (Life of server)

24tb would be enough for me. i am looking Dell Server T350 E-2314/32GB/480GB/H355

12tb is enough for block storage(veeam target)

the problem is the controller i think. lsi 9300-16i can connect to dell tray? does it compatible with dell t350. Dell can not give answer because it not dell hardware.
Del told me to use hba355i, but i cannot find anyone used this and be sure that going to work without problems…

I have understand that truenas does not have expect ixsystems, any new hardware qualified that work with.

Since this TrueNAS will be a backup target for VMs, but also used by 80 users, how are you backing up the TrueNAS and how often?

Have you considered talking direct to iX systems to get a supported system?

If using block storage with HDs, then you want mirrors, if performance is important.

But in the current era, a simpler solution is to use SSDs for block storage. Or even a fusion pool with a special metadata device.

they don’t sold at Greece! the other thing, is if i want a part like a psu. i can’t find. Dell has exellent support and parts!

The idea is to have same machines for replicate the main.

The problem is in sizing the system and all the components to fit your business. How much storage do you plan to offer the 80 users for file storage? How much storage is needed for the Veeam backup? How much storage for the host pc (scada)? The storage has to be sized for the next 5-7 years or be expandable.
Performance is the next issue. There should be defined goals and an idea of what is currently in use. Would you use all Hard Disk Drives or Flash Storage or both? What kind of files and applications are in use. Simple file storage of spreadsheets is one thing but if the company performs video production or databases, those are big system design changes.

Your problem isn’t buying from Dell or Lenovo but with buying the correct items. I don’t know if you were going to support the servers and TrueNAS software inside the company or it would be hired to an outside company. iX Systems sells and provides support for ZFS / TrueNAS Enterprise. You need qualified help picking out the hardware as what you pointed to, a Dell T350, seems underpowered for what you posted “Company around 80 users, i want to use as fileserver, and as veeam target for backup the vms, and other host pc (scada).”

If this is for a business, why not go the path of ix systems hardware with truenas enterprise and proper support ?
