New server builder here - slowly approaching my wit's end - any help greatly appreciated

If cooling is better with the case open, the case designer should never ever be allowed to work on any project in any industry…
Airflow has to be guided.

Coming back to this thread I realise… you have a NH-D15S in a Node 304? And it fits in???
My only D15 is affixed to a Xeon W-2200. And my Xeon Scalables, including one 270 W part, have to make do with U14 coolers. “No kill like overkill” they say.

Don’t know about newcomers but I mirror my boot drive because I can. With Supermicro platforms (A2SDi, X10SDV) and more than enough SATA ports it’s easy and cheap to throw in two small SSDs or DOMs and call it a day.

If free ports was an issue, I would sleep just as well with a single boot drive.

Haha yeah, it does fit in. But let me tell you, I have like 1 mm yet to spare in total. I checked and double and triple checked everywhere before I bought it to make sure and I bought some lower RAM just to be sure. Again, why? Because that was simply recommended to me and I have little knowledge about this in general – and I don’t know if less would be dangerous.

Off-topic, but knowing that you don’t know and consulting people who probably do is super wise. There are hundreds of build choices and none of them are universally great.
