To be honest, I dont see the point in building a NAS with gaming equipment . Especially if you have to buy it, and not just have it already.
The realtek NIC is wonky - might not work at all. At least upgrade that with a NIC from Intel, for example a X550-T1. Wifi is not supported. The rest should work.
Hm. My current NAS (the 3rd on various FreeNas software) is built partially from ex-gaming parts, but it’s based on Corsair Obsidian 900 case. But previous ones were compact due 2 space limitations.
IMHO, buy Fractal design Node 304, fanless PSU, cheap used 8 SATA HDD LSI logic controller from AliExpress (may be found nearly 50-60$ or sometimes less).
If you have no special requrements, just file strorage, it’s enough. But! Mainboard depends… Current RAM prices etc. I am seriously thinking about buying old DDR3 Xeon MB, having 32GB…
Personally I would buy a used server and do away from consumer parts such as gaming boards and consumer enclosures. Neither are designed for continuous 100% usage that can occur when your system has to resilver one or more drives, especially the 18 - 24TB drives that may take a week to resilver running at 100%. Consumer hardware and cases are not made for continuous usage. Server hardware and cases are designed to run at 100% 24/7 without issues. Commercial server chassis and hardware also have things like dual power supplies that can share the power load and also continue running without interuption if one supply fails. Thy also have hot swap backplanes made for server duty that eliminate air blocking rats nest of consumer grade cables prone to failure going to drives. The downside is they are loud.
Depends on the server–the HPE Microserver line aren’t particularly loud, though they don’t (officially, anyway) support hot-swapping drives.
It’s a learning curve, I’m no expert I learn something new most days and forget it the day after. I built my first Truenas server about 2 years ago from old parts. After I got comfortable with the system only then did I invest. But even then I tuned my buying to what I needed not what places like this tend to advertise.
Enjoy you system, make it work for you for what you want to do. You’ll find the really hard part about this is getting stuff to play well together. My today’s listen has been trying to get my Roku TV to play video and sound and transcode one or the other or both based on what my cheap TV can handle. The lesson to, don’t set you TV audio format to AUTO, the TV is only going to use 2 channels so set it to that. If you don’t Roku Jellyfin client won’t transcode the sound because it thinks you can play 5.1 or whatever the audio file is.
Yesterday’s lesson was, don’t rely on the network card on an older MB, fit a more modern one if you have a spare PCI slot, they are cheap and much more efficient.
