Just about to install TrueNAS Core on my upgraded hardware and whilst looking for guide came across Uncle Festers beginners guide. Then came the recommendation to install TrueNAS Scale instead of Core. I have now read that v13.0 of Core will be the last version available (apart from security updates). I had previously been advised to stick with Core as it was stable and Scale was still in development - now I am confused
I have only ever had a FreeNAS setup and used it for storing familiy photos and videos and some media streaming via Kodi.
So should I continue with Core - or opt for Scale?
SCALE. CORE is a dead product walking. iX have been recommending SCALE for new deployments for over a year now.
If all you need, or anticipate ever needing, are the core file-sharing features, CORE may yet be more stable. But for anything else, and to avoid needing to migrate in the future, SCALE.
OK thanks - for some reason I thought the two versions would be lastest development edition and legacy being the latest stable - sorry for the confusion
Just backing up what I currently have on my old FreeNAS as I will need to use the 3 x 1TB HDDs before buying some new WD Red later in the year.
Seen some reasonably priced SH ones on eBay.
When considering “WD Reds” (the original “bad actor”) and indeed all HDD’s, please take into account the information found at List of known SMR drives | TrueNAS Community as SMR drives are generally unsuitable for use with TrueNAS. Check for the affected model numbers and avoid - get CMR versions.
“Willful disinformation” like the fact that there will be no CORE 14 release, that no feature development at all is being done on CORE, and that CORE will only be receiving, at most, security updates going forward? If you’re calling that “willful disinformation” (which is a slightly nicer way of saying “lies”), defend that–because Kris and Morgan have confirmed all three of these statements.
I should note that this has nothing to do with which version I prefer–I often and loudly disagree with iX. But they’ve made very clear their position that the way ahead is with SCALE and that CORE’s days are numbered.
Then please, don’t make vague, hand-wave-y statements. If there are specific statements in this thread that you believe to be “willful disinformation,” identify them, and defend your statement. If you’re instead referring more generally to statements other people are making in other places, well, I guess that would lead to the question of why you’re bringing them up here.
The page starts with, among other things, the following line:
With this transition, TrueNAS 13.0 and 13.3 continue to receive bug fixes related to stability and security. New feature development and component improvement continues on Linux-based TrueNAS versions.
iX specifically says CORE is not EoL, but they also make it clear to only expect maintenance updates. They plan to offer this “for many years still to come”, so any current CORE-users can rest easily, if they are happy with the current functionality and don’t need now deprecated things like jails, plugins or VMs.
This topic was started by a new user and I have no qualms recommending that user to use the TrueNAS branch that will see continued development of new features, and that branch is SCALE.
Usually, I would point to “legacy” until “latest” has reached .2 or .3, and is known to be reasonably bug-free. But in this case it wouldn’t make sense to go for Dragonfish and its discontinued k3s app ecosystem over docker-compose in Electric Eel.
