New User looking to quickly be up and running a simple NAS

I am Mike. I have decades of *NIX experience, including many Linux flavors.

I am about to receive a Bee-Link-dot-com ME Mini PC, currently 2TB SSD storage, expandable to 24TB, for my home/office LAN.

My goal is to stand up a robust NAS, primarily for my office/business, but also for family file storage and sharing.

I’m looking for the quickest installation and configuration of TrueNAS for my application. How ought I get started?

Please, advise. Thank you.

~ Mike

  1. Make sure you pick SSDs that match the power budget of this small system. See this thread for details.
  2. Follow the documentation.

Welcome to the TrueNAS forums!

I would not characterize TrueNAS and ZFS as simple.

Yes the GUI attempts to make setup and normal operations straight forward. The GUI covers most things and some users may go their entire life with TrueNAS experiencing no serious problems. Plus, as software development continues, the GUI and other aspects should improve.

However, I recommend every new TrueNAS user assume that during their TrueNAS’ life, they will have to both drop to *nix command line and perform ZFS or other storage related commands. Poking around now to see the command’s output, (when not familiar with them), can reduce future stress.

Your familiarity with *nix helps a lot compared to some other users.

Good luck.
