Noob error: drive not fully inserted in new case

Brand new to NAS. My Jonsbo N3 case was delayed so I built the parts outside a case and set up TrueNas Scale with 4 hard disks 2+2 mirror.

When case came in I thought I set everything up perfectly… Truenas booted, immich began accepting imports.

Then I noticed the little flag saying I had a corrupt pool. Hard drive status for one of the drives said unavailable. I started a scrub after reading some posts about such things.

Then I read another post while watching a new Nascompares video of him building an intel-based version of Truenas Scale on Intel )I am AMD with minisforum BD790i mobo and but using the same M.2 to 6 SATA ports card.

WHen he got to inserting the drives and hating the rubber stumps on drives I then opened mine and saw one drive not really inserted.

I inserted it and checked status… system sees it now. This is supposed to be hot-swappable and it seems to have worked.

And my guess is that the system will self-adjust to the drive being available now. But wanted to check is there is something else I should do now. I was importing a lot of images and videos while that drive was unavailable.

And hints for me?

Thanks.

ZFS is self healing and should recover from the drive being disconnected.

However, I would suggest using a proper HBA rather than an M.2 to SATA adapter. Those are known to have issues with ZFS, especially with sustained actions such as resilvering after any drive failures/disconnects.

Thanks… I may do that if I must… but my single pcie slot has a 3060 in it.

Here’s an odd question… and rather cumbersome idea. Resilvering seems to be a rare event, ideally. Could I possibly remove the m-2 adapter and video card, insert a pcie sata port card… connect everything… resilver… then reverse the process?

I actually have no idea if I will need a video card… the apu is fairly capable… but I want to try something like making an IPTV DVR of sorts. All this was brought about because cablecos n longer have to support cablecards… and their DVR solutions suck compared to tivo. So, video is very much important to this… and yet, the ultimate solution may be a NAS for storage and something else to record/deliver video. in that case a video card in this NAS will be unnecessary.

Update: I see your point… just plugging in that drive triggered a resilvering. Fingers crossed.

I noticed the same thing. I accidentally removed the wrong drive, and when I reinserted it, it triggered a quick resilver within seconds.

I witnessed this in real time with the Alerts and Tasks icons in the top corner of the page.

EDIT: According to ChatGPT, the self-healing feature of ZFS can also protect the pool’s integrity against chemical spills. I’m going to pour muriatic acid on my server as a test.

I trust AI chatbots with my life.

EDIT 2: Does anyone know if Seagate’s warranty covers physical damage?
