[Not Accepted] Allow option for uninterrupted shutdown

I notice that this hadn’t been formally proposed or formally addressed.

Problem
Fangtooth 25.04 introduced a change in which users are shaken down during shutdown, reportedly for the sake of STIG compliance.

Non-audited community users are surprised and inconvenienced by this. It’s not clear that we gain anything in return for the added friction.

Indeed: some of us feel incentivized by this to bypass the middleware for routine shutdowns or restarts. This could make iX sad or trigger other unspoken consequences.

Leading operating systems address this as an opt-in or opt-out feature.

Solution
It would be nice if we could opt out from inquest on a per-system basis.

Impact
Enterprises would continue with the new 25.04 behavior. :face_with_monocle:

Hobbyists could opt out and return to the prior status quo! :cowboy_hat_face:

Agreed. Tempted to poke around the source code and disable it myself.

Think it’s openly hostile to ux to introduce a “feature” that can’t be disabled for homelab users.

Aside: cherrry on top is I can’t link to github to the official truenas org in the forums :upside_down_face:

Thank you for submitting this feature request. After keeping it open to gauge community interest, we’re closing it as it hasn’t received enough votes to prioritize for development.

It would be nice if these messages accounted for the fact that this feature request is already implemented–kind of[1]–in 25.10.

  1. If you select restart/shutdown through the GUI in CE 25.10, you aren’t prompted for a reason, but you still are if you select it from the console menu. ↩︎

It would be great if there were infinite resources and time to reply to every community request with an expanded response, but this is not the case. For the most part, standardized responses will continue to be used.
