I mean I agree about Truenas currently. But I’ve also used plenty of systems with smartcards instead of a user password. And systems with a mixed variety of user authn methods.
Agreed. I was speaking more generally to a situation where it might be enabled for some users and not for others, which I don’t think is possible in TrueNAS.
I work for the DoD, so that’s what I do every day–smartcard and PIN. And it’d sure be nice if Windows could be made to default to that as a login method, but that doesn’t seem to be possible. But is that ever the case with Google? Maybe so, under some of their more business-related stuff. And if so, then the username on one page, password (or other authenticator as required for that user) on another makes sense.
“The system” in my question was generic, and what I really had in mind was neither TrueNAS nor Google but Nethserver, another piece of server software I use which has, with its latest release, moved to a login method of username on one screen, password on the next, 2FA (if required) on a third. And it’s a pointless change IMO, particularly since it will never (at least in its current incarnation) not require a password.
I haven’t seen a modern DoD system. Do they add an additional client-side software component? Pure Windows makes it very easy, just insert the card instead of Ctrl-Alt-Del.
