Thanks for your explanation, but I’d like to disagree - There is a fundamental difference between .recycle and snapshots. I don’t care about files that were changed, I only want a ‘second chance’ to un-delete files. Snapshots provide no way to see if a file was changed, remained the same or was deleted.

There is no way to even access files from snapshot currently. I’d have to clone the snapshot into a separate dataset and somehow compare it against original one (or I’d had to know which specific file I’ve deleted of which I’ve changed my mind, or which was deleted accidentally). And actually I have no space available to clone my main datapool, so I’m out of options really in 25.10.

I also don’t get the:

Really? They had issues with an explicit opt-in feature? Couldn’t they like.. disable it? I don’t get why iX thought, they had to remove this feature for everyone.

So please wait for the 26.04 release before removing features, deprecate them first, provide explanation of the removal. There is not a single note about this removal in the release notes for 25.10..

I believe an enterprise customer has a sysadmin who knows exactly what they’re running on their network; I’d imagine they’ve RTFM’d more than once, and that the checkbox enabling a file deletion job is not checked by default.

Yesterday they’ve added a note about it:

SMB Shares:

  • In 25.10, SMB share configuration only displays options relevant to each purpose-based preset. Existing shares that previously used the No Preset option are automatically migrated to the Legacy Share preset during upgrade. New shares cannot access legacy configuration options.

    Legacy Share options include enabling SMB guest access, the SMB recycle bin, home directory export, AFP compatibility shares, and disabling shadow copies. The SMB recycle bin feature is no longer available for new shares due to security and usability concerns. For file recovery and versioning, use ZFS snapshots, which provide more reliable and predictable data protection. For more information, see Legacy Share Settings and the TrueNAS API documentation sharing.smb.create return values for options LegacyOpt.

Closing, as described in the release note linked above, the decision to remove this was made on the grounds of security and usability.
