Hi,
I’v been a TrueNAS user for a while and recently upgraded to SCALE 24.04. So far I have only kept local backups by running a replication task to another local pool and then removing and storing that drive. I would like to improve the situation by doing off-site backups to an online storage provider that supports SFTP, Swift and S3.
The problem is that my internet uplink is too slow for the initial ~1TB backup. I reckon it will be ok for ongoing differential backups afterwards. So here is the plan:
- Export pool to a USB drive
- upload initial copy of the pool from the USB drive to off-site storage from another computer with high-speed internet connection
- set up a replication task pointing to that off-site location which will do periodic PUSH replications directly from my TrueNAS.
- requirements: encryption during transfer and offsite storage, low transfer volume via efficient checksumming (due to the slow uplink)
How can I achieve this? I gathered that TrueNAS uses rclone for encryption and replication of files to e.g. amazon S3 compatible cloud storage services. (correct?) But I don’t quite see how to prepopulate the destination and then configure TrueNAS to use that as the starting point for incremental backups. Is there a guide I could follow? What storage protocol is preferable? Other hints?
Thanks a lot!
