Pool One or more devices has experienced an error resulting in Data corruption. Need help!

Hey,
I recently set up my new NAS and was super stoked. My last NAS was 10 years old and still ran FreeNAS.

Anyways - everything is “working” (as in: it turns on and the hardware seems fine) and TruenNAS is completely set up. Great feeling. However due to the daily scheduled Scrub each evening I get new Data corruption almost every evening and I have a very hard time fining out why. Every time I replace the corrupted file but since this happens daily with different files there is clearly something wrong with the setup. I read in some other posts that it could be cable related or even the RAM but I have no idea how to properly read the outputs of smartctl.

I would greatly appreciate if a tech wizard could hint me in the right direction as to what device/part exactly might be causing the issue.

It’d be really good to know your hardware, specifically what drives you’re using, what motherboard, and how the two are connected. It seems pretty unlikely that all five drives would experience the same number of errors, making it seem more likely that the actual problem is elsewhere–cabling, the controller, and/or power seem like the most likely candidates.

Same amount of checksum errors points to cabling and/or controller issues.

The mainboard uses an asm 1166 sata controller that can include port multiplication. This can also be the cause of the errors.

There’s your problem(s)

  1. No power
  2. No memory

Frankly I am suprised it works at all!!

As @dan says - for errors to appear on all drives as chksum errors - its likley to be cabling or power. Note that cabling will also include the backplane (has a weird sata board insite where the drives plug in) although its not a sophisticated one

Can you explain a bit about this? How is it connected to the motherboard? Through individual SATA cables, or by some other means? Because it seems like all your drives are showing this in the SMART log:

…which points to a comms problem, and that backplane seems like a single component that handles all the comms.

If you google images for “jonsbo n2 sata board” you should get a view front/back views. It’s not allowing me to attach images to my posts.

Basically the Drives just slide in at the front and the back has 2 Molex connectors - 1 for drive power and 1 for fan power and the sata ports.

I had some trouble fitting the molex Y cable into the molex cable from the power supply. If these components are the most likely culprits so far I will check that all the drives are all the way in, that the molex cable is properly seated and maybe check/replace the sata cables. Thats a place to start for sure! Thank you.
