Proper way to Detatch and replace HDD

Hi, New to true nas. I am using ElectricEel-24.10.1 with two 8TB disks in MIRROR mode.

Unfortunately after only 72 hours one of the two disks reported one bad sector (offline unrecoverable) and all smart tests fail.

I want to return the drive for a replacement.

What is the best way to remove the drive?
Can i just detatch it from the vdev and remove it physically?

Also while i am waiting for a replacement can i keep using true nas with one disk only?
Or do i have to shut it down until the replacement drive arrives?

In the past, I’ve just turned the server off, removed the faulty drive, booted back up if needed; returned the drive.

When you get your replacement, install it then use the “Replace” option on the offline drive with the new drive and let it re-silver.

Just obviously remember, if the second drive fails while the machine is on with just the one drive, the pool will fail fully

Thank you for the reply.

Thankfully there’s not a lot of data on the drives, since the installation is only 5 days old.
I am absolutely ok having the server turned off for a few days or even having to start the installation from scratch if something goes wrong during the replacing of the drive.

I just wanted to know what is the proper way of removing the faulty drive.
If it’s as simple as taking off the drive and replacing it then its all good.

“Offline” the failing/failed drive from the vdev.

Power off the system.

Physically remove the drive.

Optionally, power back on and use your pool with a degraded, non-redundant mirror vdev.

Wait for new drive to arrive.

Power off the system.

Physically plug in new drive.

Choose “Replace” on the old (removed) drive in the mirror vdev, and choose the new drive from the dropdown list.

Thank you for your input, i just did exaclty that.
