Hello! I have a question for yall today. I am using an old Asus Z87-A motherboard for TrueNAS Core, which has been really nice experience actually. However, as I read, it has the RealTek 8111-GR on board NIC. During a copy tonight, that on-board NIC Failed on me and the link state kept going up and down endlessly. I am going to switch to an Intel NIC, but I was wondering what you all would suggest for a Home Gigabit RJ45 Network running CAT6 Cable. I am not very versed on NICs and I want to get one that is perfect for TrueNAS for not to high a price. $60 or $70 if possible. Let me know, and thank you!
Intel x550, x540 (previous model). Make sure you get the correct bracket needed, low profile or full height.
The price of that is a little to high for me, is there something lower in price that still works with TrueNAS?
10GTek? Mixed reviews on NICs. Based off Intel chips. Some of us use SFP+ transceivers from them. They have more models listed.
Adding a link to post on NIC advice. Maybe save for x550, seems to run cooler and use less power.
I guess I should have said that right now I am running 1Gbe LAN, with plan to go to 10Gbe later. So does this card support the the speeds I am working in and want to work in later?
Info from Intel. Data rate per port. 10GbE/5GbE/2.5GbE/1GbE/100Mb
Well, I’d have to get the 540T because the price is easier on me, found one on eBay, but I contacted the seller to get more information on it and asked to verify it wasn’t a knock off one. Also, do these get hot? Or will it be fine if I am just doing 1Gbe?
Man, I wish there was a 10G NIC that worked in a 1x PCIe slot.
That is all I have open.
Do internet search for Intel x540 heat and you should get plenty of hits. The x540 will do 1Gbps.
I thought you wanted 10Gbps since you mentioned CAT6. If you want only 1Gbps, you can just look for an Intel card of that speed.
See the Networking section on the hardware guide.

I plan to go to 10Gbe when I move out and in with a friend, we want to build out a 10Gbe network, could I zip-tie a fan to it to help it keep cooler in a consumer case?
I am just posting all the links I have on Networking.
NETWORKING
Ok, while I appreciate the links, this is kind of going out of the scope of my question of NICs to consider. If the 540 has over heating issues, and being I am using a consumer case, which I hope I could zip-tie a fan to it, then maybe I need to stick to a 1Gbe card till I have a proper Racked Server. Yes I plan to upgrade later, and yes future proofing is a thing still.
Just get an Intel i210 on a card.
X540, Marvell AQtion are good chipsets.
I just bought this card today actually. Thanks for the suggestion too.
