Reinstall on different device

Hi there,

I am very new to NAS and I have received an old HP server and was installing TrueNAS but it didn’t go exactly to plan.

I tried to install from USB with a 4GB SATA HDD attached but because I only had one USB I was forced to install onto the HDD.

I now have another USB but I can’t figure out how to re-install and boot via the USB like it did the first time.

It’s a ProLiant MicroServer Gen8 (yes I know it’s an older server but it’s solid)

Any advice welcome…

Im not sure I understand you correctly, but I assume you mean 4 TB HD, not 4 GB.

To boot from the USB stick, you can invoke the boot menu. I think it is F11. Then choose the Truenas installer.

yes sorry, a 4TB drive. I have a keyb attached via USB but pressing F12 doesnt do anything It’s like the keyb isnt recognised… not sure if I’ll have to remove the HDD and reformat it ?

Did you get that server with iLO? If yes, you can install TrueNAS from the iLO web interface, you can directly mount the official ISO file.

You don’t have to format a HDD to install TrueNAS.

Because the ProLiant is short on SATA ports, and you want all of these for the data pool, you’ll probably be installing to a USB-attached boot device (a small and cheap genuine SSD on USB adapter is recommended over a USB thumb drive). But you’ll still need a USB installer for that, installing onto the other USB device.

So at the moment I have 1x4TB drive in the bay, 1x16gb USB drive (with ISO) and a 500GB SSD via USB (with ISO).

When I boot up the server it asks me if I want to press F9 for Setup, F11 for Boot Menu. I press F9/F11 on the keyb and nothing happens, even though there’s lights on the keyb.

I don’t know how to access the iLO web interface

Make sure to press the key repeatedly during the boot process.

If you have a ILO part at the back of the server you can connect an ethernet cable there. You might have to check on your router which address/hostname the server has. You should have a list of dhcp leases on your router. I think there is sometimes a stick on the iLO interface with some more details. You can use the IP address to connect to the iLO web interface. Using the web interface you no longer have to have a physical keyboard & monitor connected to the server.

pressing the key does nothing

sometimes it’s the USB ports…
Try using one of the rear USB 2.0 ports (black).
If you have one, use a wired keyboard.
