I have some old rar files that I’ve lost the password to. I want to run John the ripper on these and thought I could use the spare clock cycles on my TrueNAS to do this
What’s the best way to do this? I’ll need to build a John version

If it’s not available as a docker container you can’t run it on truenas, since truenas is an appliance os and does not support adding additional software/package to the base installation.
I know it’s an appliance
I was hoping to get a blank docker linux install rather than using a VM
maybe with fangtooth in april since fangtooth adds support for lxc container.
Thanks that’s what I was thinking of (I hate ME/CFS & brain fog) I thought it was available now!
guess I’m going to have to do some reading on LXC
The Truenas podcast did a small preview of the lxc implementation coming with fangtooth https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWnzZRALxxo
Saw that and that’s probably what triggered my brian now that the festive period is over
If it can run in a LXC, odds are it can also run in a sandbox using Jailmaker under 24.10 or 24.04.
