SAS-Expander 4e/8e to 8i/16i

Hello,

for a JBOD I’m looking for a SAS-Expander that provides connection from 4e or 8e (SFF-8644 ports) to 8i or 16i. On the external side I want to connect to an LSI SAS 9300-8e card and internally to connect 8 or up to 16 (8 is my minimum, more would be nice) SATA drives.

The SAS-Expander should also be able to run without a motherboard and simply be connected to a power supply.

Could someone here recommend a model that works without issues?

The Adaptec AEC-82885T will work - and is 36 Ports

I run one in a case with no motherboard, just a PSU and drives

Thanks for this information. This expander looks interesting, but seems a bit “large” for my use-case.

Does anyone have another recommendation?

Its cheap - so who cares if its large?

Unless its too physically large

8e to 16i needs 24 ports.

8e to 24i needs 32

But extra ports don’t really matter.

The Intel expanders work well too. They have 24 and 36 port versions.

Do you need an expander, or do you need an external chassis which comes with a suitable backplane, including expander?

I need an expander, not a backplane with the expander included.

Do you have specific models here?
Do they also have a separate power supply connector?

They have separate power connectors and do not need to be in a PCIe slot.

Of course, they’re out of production, but available on eBay etc
