Setting up SMART tests for the first time

Hello people,

I have just finished setting up my first NAS system and Ive been browsing these forums on how to ensure data safety. Ive read alot about SMART tests and how they are important but have been removed from the GUI. I was wondering how you are supposed to setup SMART tests now and how to schedule them. I have 3 12TB iron wolf pro’s on a VM if this info is required.

Have a look at “scrutiny” in the TrueNAS app store and check if it satisfies your needs.

It will not; Scrutiny (aside from being abandonware) doesn’t handle SMART self-tests.

You simply create a new test, select the disks, then choose short or long and set the schedule. The change in the GUI confused many people, but overall the functionality is still there.

No, it isn’t. There is no possibility in the 25.10 GUI to “create a new test.” The only way “the functionality is still there” is if you want to create cron jobs for smartctl -t long /dev/sdz.
