[Solved] Pool becomes unavailable after reboot

Hi everyone,
it’s the first time I use TrueNAS and I have this problem.
Basically I created a pool with only one SSD disk called Playground. I only use this pool to contain virtual machines and I don’t need it to be duplicated in another SSD for safety.
The fact is that the pool works, but if I restart the server the pool becomes unusable. To solve it each time I have to click on the “Export/Disconnect” button and keep only Confirm Export ticked, then I do Import Pool and everything starts working again.
Can you tell me what I’m doing wrong?
I ran the disk checks and everything is in good health, I add that I have another pool made up of 3 hdds that do not encounter this problem.

TrueNAS Scale version: ElectricEel-24.10.0.2

Has the SSD be used by another system that uses ZFS?

If so, you might have encountered this issue:
https://ixsystems.atlassian.net/jira/software/c/projects/NAS/issues/NAS-132414

You should give hardware details. Are all your disks directly attached by SATA to the motherboard? Wondering if this is a USB problem since you didn’t list.

It is attached via SATA to the motherboard

It was an SSD that was previously used as the primary SSD for a notebook and it contained Windows 10. I didn’t format it because I thought TrueNAS did that, do you think this could be the problem?

Windows uses NTFS, that shouldn’t be an issue. You might have a different issue than the one I was thinking of.

Can you post the output of the following shell commands:

  • sudo grep -i import /var/log/middlewared.log
  • sudo blkid

TrueNAS tried to import the pool but couldn’t find the disk.

[2024/11/19 08:27:45] (ERROR) PoolService.import_on_boot_impl():304 - Failed to import 'Playground' with guid: '13872113668859297037' with error: "cannot import '13872113668859297037': no such pool available\n"

In the output of blkid I don’t see the disk that has the label for the pool on any disk either.

Are you sure the disk is still plugged in? What does lsblk say?

In the meantime I rebooted the server, I went to the bios and the disk is detected there too. Anyway the disk is sdb

I also updated the comments above, because the names had changed

Do I see it correctly that blkid is not seeing the partition /dev/sdb1?
That is the same symptom I had where blkid isn’t finding the ZFS partition.
I did end up destroying and recreating the pool.

Could you post the output of the following:

  • blkid --probe /dev/sdb
  • blkid --probe /dev/sdb1

(If the device name changed between reboots, please adjust accordingly).

root@ATLAS24[~]# blkid --probe /dev/sdb
/dev/sdb: PTUUID="3ca7476b-e674-4c03-ba1a-00600cb64076" PTTYPE="gpt"
root@ATLAS24[~]# blkid --probe /dev/sdb1
blkid: /dev/sdb1: ambivalent result (probably more filesystems on the device, use wipefs(8) to see more details)

Looks like blkid might still be picking up signatures from the NTFS file system. That is an issue, because zpool import uses that tool for discovery.

Not really ideal behaviour. Maybe we TrueNAS should wipe existing file system markers when adding a new disk.

This commands sounds super scary, but without options only displays the found file system marker (but make sure you have a backup):

  • sudo wipefs /dev/sdb1

Ok, so now I should remove vfat, right? Could you guide me on how to do it?

I know the command to do it, not sure if it’s going to damage the pool. Please have a backup.

This should be run before importing the pool (i.e. after rebooting). It will clear the vfat labels. It does do a backup in the /root folder of any data it overwrites.

WARNING: Potentially Dangerous

  • sudo wipefs --backup --all -t vfat /dev/sdb1

Keep the output of that command in case anything goes wrong.

Ok, now?

Try importing it and we will see.

The large signature 46 41 54 33 32 20 20 20 is fine to erase, that’s literally the ASCII text "FAT32 ". I do not like the single and two bytes signature.

I was reading a guide and they did this as the last command?
sudo dd if=/root/wipefs-md0-0x00000438.bak of=/dev/md0 seek=$((0x00000438)) bs=1 conv=notrunc
Don’t I have to do it? Obviously changing the hex values

That command is if you want to restore the data that was wiped by wipefs. It’s only necessary if something went wrong.

That’s a dangerous command (anything involving dd is dangerous). You’d also have to modify the output device (of) and the offset before using it.
