What’s the best way to try+test TrueNAS without buying expensive NAS hardware?

As it installs on pretty much anything x86, a vm or old hardware should work.

If it’s a matter of “see the UI,” the docs really should handle that without your needing to install it at all. If you want to play around in the UI, installing it in a VM (VirtualBox will work fine for this purpose) is probably the best answer. Keep in mind that 24.10 is due out next month, and is said to have some pretty significant changes to the UI.
