I recently upgraded to ElectricEel-24.10.0.2 and configured TrueCloud Backup with Storj.
Given that there is 2 TB to backup, I figured it would take many hours for the first backup to complete, but instead what I’m seeing doesn’t give me confidence in TrueCloud Backup.
The task is running but is perpetually stuck on “Starting” at 0%.
When I view the Storj dashboard I see that 250.03 GB has been uploaded but this is after several days.
I’ve tried aborting and restarting the task. It never gets past “Starting 0.00%”.
Here’s the task configuration:

I’ve been using TrueNAS and FreeNAS before it for a decade and would really like to have a simple, reliable cloud backup solution in case my unit at home fails. I was previously using Duplicacy in a jail but was hoping TrueCloud Backup would be simpler to maintain and operate.
I’d greatly appreciate any guidance / tips to get this working. Or if TrueCloud Backup is still not ready for prime time, it would be great to know that as well.
These tasks process percentages were never great.
I would stop the process and then see what the logs show you.
Then storj is definitely not for you.
Storj is a at best a beta S3 provider with added layers of complexity. Basically it is a centralized S3 with a wonky decentralized storage backend that hopes someday we will use the native integration, but weren’t even able to convince or provide a native integration for their partner ixSystems. If you ever wondered why the TrueNAS downloads and updates are so slow, it is because TrueNAS uses storj as their mirror.
There is also a in my opinion high risk of them running out of venture capital money.
So what I would recommend you instead is someone like Backblaze. They know what they are doing and it just works. Also there are only a little bit more expensive than storj.
I migrated to OneDrive (not working anymore, API calls are too limited) and I am currently migrating again to sync data to another TrueNAS.
I am still on CORE. I used a simple could sync task to Backblaze. They offer object lock and lifecycle rules for ransomware protection, but I am not sure if TrueNAS supports that. I know that Synology Hybrid Backup can’t handle object lock.
