There have been a couple of serious vulnerability in the Linux kernels detected lately, and update have been provided for Truenas Scale. I would like to confirm that Truenas Core is not affected by these vulnerabilities so that it remains safe to use. Is this correct?

Correct: CORE does not use the Linux kernel.
Check for known vulnerabilities in the FreeBSD 13 kernel.

Updating is usually fairly simple, but it does depend on what features you currently use and if your pool is GELI-encrypted or (hopefully) not.
While I would not recommend rushing a move, perhaps today is a good time to start reading through the migration guide. Why procrastinate further?
I am not really resisting the switch to Scale. it is just that Core has been working great and I see no urgency to switch. having said that, I have read the migration guide and have been slowly preparing for the switch. my pools are not encrypted. I got rid of all my jails except one that is running the letsencrypt certificate service which is included in scale. I should be able to install scale now and simply restoring my config.
perhaps one question: will my VMs transfer to Scale or do those need to be reinstalled? (this determines whether I need to back these up at the file level.)
For my UEFI VMs, there was very little drama during migration. For my legacy GRUB VMs, I retired them and moved their functionality to Docker apps.
