TrueNas in Intel Nuc only to use with docker/vm?

Hello masters!

I am a QNap user for a long time now, and recently i’ve got a Intel Nuc to be a Home Assistant server.

The Nuc came with Linuxmint but i am wondering if a can install TrueNas Scale for “only” run:

  1. Virtual Machine with HomeAssistant
  2. two dockers: MariaDB server and Cloudflared

The Nuc configuration is:
Celeron J5040
8gb ram
ssd 240gb (thats it, no extras hdd/ssd)

The question is: it will work?

Thanks!!

It works? Most probably
Have sense? No

Btw: im using alpine Linux for run docker, both bare metal and into a TN VM, IMHO Is perfect for low power build. Never try VM into it

I expect you could, but why would you want to? TrueNAS is first and foremost a storage-based operating system. Your proposed use for the system is, well, not storage. If your need is to run VMs and containers, a different OS would likely be better suited for that–I’d suggest Proxmox, personally; there’s even a one-line command[1] to create the HAOS VM. And Cloudflared and MariaDB server can both live inside HAOS.

That’s how I’m running Home Assistant–under Proxmox on a Lenovo mini-PC, using the scripted installation I mentioned. It works great.

Thank you guys!!

Also, you need two drives for TrueNAS (without hacking the installer)

And 3 if you want redundancy.
