TrueNAS Mini X+ dead mobo?

My TrueNAS Mini X+ from 2023 seems to be having a rough time. Symptoms:

  • IPMI network port only lights up one light, not both. On the router side, it knows a cable is connected, but no MAC appears and no DHCP address gets assigned
  • The two normal ethernet ports light both lights when a cable is connected, but just like the IPMI, it doesn’t show up on the router with an IP address (I have tried other ethernet cables and other ports on the router)
  • I attached a VGA monitor (luckily, I still had one!), but it gets no signal at any point. I tried removing all hard drives (except the build-in SSD) before booting, but same story
  • I notice that the motherboard has a BMC heartbeat LED which is supposed to blink green, but instead it is constantly dimly lit

Thoughts or advice? Anything else I should try?

Contact ixsystems. They might point you to supermicro but at the very least, they’ll help you verify the board is dead. I’ve never experienced better customer service than with ixsystems re: motherboards.

It looks like they won’t even give me advice unless I pay for some kind of support contract. I may do that, but it depends how much money they’re asking for.

Does anyone have experience diagnosing issues with the TrueNAS Mini?

Also, the docs mention:

Your system is equipped with the optimal BIOS and IPMI firmware out of the box. DO NOT UPGRADE your system’s BIOS and IPMI firmware.

However, I can’t find anywhere to download the firmware from Ixsystem’s site…? So does that mean it’s effectively impossible to replace the motherboard?

And this is why I build my own server from consumer parts…

Hope you will figure it out. Is it possible to take it apart, re-seat the CPU, re-seat the RAM, etc? Measuring power supply rails?

I believe the CPU is integrated into the mobo, but I’ll try reseating RAM.

I’ve never encountered a computer company that doesn’t provide BIOS downloads… :frowning:
