I use Acronis True Image (latest version = 41736) to run some file backup.
Up to version 24.05.2.5, all was going well. Since I installed the 24.10 branch
I have errors occurring on the same files over and over.
Acronis True Image returns that error :
“Failed to back up file or folder ‘\192.168.1.4\Backup\Example.srt’. It may be blocked by another application”
Those blocks are NOT random, it is always blocking on the same file (tried to restart the TrueNAS server and Windows Workstation (all Antivirus and Firewall are disabled)). A folder can have 4 files in it, one or two will fail with that error message and always the same.
Going back to version 24.05.2.5, all is fine, each version of the 24.10 branch fails (I tried 24.10.1 - 24.10.0.2 - 24.10.0.1 - 24.10.). I assume this relates to Samba one way or another or the Electric Eel branch.
Can anybody try and guide me in producing logs to try and debug the problem please, my knowledge is so limited so that I do not know where to find the right files to debug this.
Nope. And debugging it without help is impossible for me as I have no idea why I only have that problem with True Image and not other software like Macrium Reflect. Must be an issue with how TI access SMB Share…
Do you have the TrueNAS SMB shares mapped to drive letters on Windows? You should try providing screenshots and describing your set up as much as you can.
Seems crazy that this TrueNas post is the only thing I found on this issue. I started having a heap of these “Failed to back up file or folder […]. It may be blocked by another application”.
In my case it was because the file itself was “blocked” by Windows and needed to be unblocked. Open the files’ properties and tick the unblock box, or run a powershell script similar to gci -Recurse | Unblock-File in the root(s) of your backup task.
I must be blind and can’t see a way to edit my post, but it might actually be that ATI (2020 in my case) doesn’t like NFTS alternate data streams (at least over SMB maybe)? I am also getting the same error on some Thumbs.db files that have an additional zero length stream called “encryptable”. After removing that stream so only the $DATA remains, ATI seems happy with that file. Seems weird though, as I wouldn’t have touched these files for a long time.
Also interesting that this backup job started failing the day after I patched TrueNAS (2025-01-22)! I have another backup job for the same share that was reenabled 2025-01-28 and this was working fine. Maybe ATI was doing something when I rebooted TrueNAS and it only borked the enabled job? Not sure.
Thank you so much rhuneai!!! All the locked file have some sort of ADS. I now need to dig further. Why was ATI not disturbed in the past by ADS presence and is now. My hypothesis that the 24.10 changed something on that regard. I am not knowledgeable to know where though…
I am having the same issue after the latest update to TrueNAS Scale as well. Happens with Acronis True Image and I also tries another software idrive to do a local backup and same issues.
For those looking for a solution to be able to backup files. I used a freeware called NirSoft AlternateStreamView, searched all folder I wanted to backup for hidden alternate streams. 99.99% of them were :Zone.Identifier:$DATA data. I deleted them all using the software and now all backups are working great.
No more locked files.
If it can help somebody in the future. Thanks again to rhuneai for pointing the source of the problem.
