My TrueNAs box has a 8x16TB enterprise HDDs pool for storage and a 128GB SATA boot drive (a Samsung 830 from 2011)
While copying some files to the pool, I noticed the boot pool was showing errors and started a scrub. Shortly after, the NAS froze and I had to do a hard power off.
Are the HDDs at risk of having been damaged (head crashing on platter in particular)
What about the storage pool integrity? The existing data should not have been affected right? I can delete the directory I was copying data to and start over again.
I have placed an order for a replacement boot SSD and will do a clean install once it arrives. Should I restore a backup from an older TrueNAS config data or is it safe to use a config backup performed now, assuming it succeeds?
As for your HDD heads crashing into the platters, I can’t say, other than it would be highly rare event. Especially for Enterprise grade disks. And if it did occur, probably few or one HDD. Hopefully under your redundancy limit, (like RAID-Z2’s 2 disk lost and no data loss).
Next, you probably don’t want a configuration backup performed now. An older one would probably be both better and fine.
One thing people have done is written a script to perform a cron’ed automated backup of the configuration to the data pool. Like once a day and keeping the last 30 days, (or more). This means if your boot pool is dying and has been for 7 days, you can get a configuration backup from 8 or 10 days ago that is expected to be clean.
