Understanding Home Directories

Ok I think we are nearly there.

What do you mean by this? Is this screenshot 8?

If so its wrong. You are trying to give Richard a home directory on the SMB share dataset. Like I mentioned above home directories are different to SMB private share areas. Which correct me if I’m wrong I think you’re trying to create. Richard most likely doesn’t need a home directory in that sense.

Probably because of the misconfiguration above. You may need to re-stamp permissions on the dataset recursively or start again with a new one once you have removed Richard’s home directory.

Once configured correctly you should not need to create or assign anything to users just simply create them an account on the TrueNAS and tell them to point their clients at \\ipaddress\home3new and it will handle the rest.

Keep away from Home Directories as they are most likely not needed in your config.

Whew!
It worked.

Thank you for explicitly calling out to not use the UI’s home directory feature.

I think for “fun” I will delete and remake this system a few times to try to ingrain in my brain the proper way to do this.

Do you happen to know what iX Systems’ rationale is for making a home directory option available when it seems to be something to avoid?

As someone who is new to TrueNAS, I had a hard time wrapping my head around the user directory being auto-created on first access without being predefined. Thus why I was drawn to clicking on the “Create Home Directory” option.

Thanks again!

Great, well done you for your perseverance.

One of the best things about TrueNAS is that it can do so many things over so many different protocols and therefore there are lots of buttons to press but often we only need a certain subset. It’s the Swiss Army knife of the data storage world.

The feature has been available since FreeNAS 8. If we removed the option it would break many legacy users. We do hide away the feature in advanced settings for a reason. Usually hiding a setting means we’ll get a bunch of influencers writing up howtos on using it (even when there are better ways to do things)

Thanks @awalkerix for the info on the legacy nature. I agree you don’t want to break legacy users.

I’m doing this testing on TrueNAS Scale 25.04 RC1, and the home directory option for a new user is not hidden, but rather prominent (I don’t even have to scroll to see it). It’s right under the bright blue checkmark in this screenshot, and it’s what I have erroneously been using. Is this something different than what you’re talking about?

I’m talking about the SMB home option. Home directories are a thing that maybe is important for some people. We default to /var/empty for a reason. Defaults work.

Hey Johnny one more thing –
What are you using to capture long scrolling windows to post as a screenshot in the forums? I’m on Linux using Spectacle, but I don’t see that feature. Thanks.

Nothing clever, I just have a high res screen and Mac’s built in screenshot.

So you have something clever…
