Updates Being Blocked in Certain Regions due to Anti-Piracy Measures

Again agreed, but not the topic of this particular thread!

Fair enough, here’s an on-topic comment:

Perhaps Piracy Shield will be broken or dismantled, but until that happens it will be difficult to get an update using the built-in update functionality. Is there an officially supported mirror for updates one can use instead?

DNS tweaks will help some, but if the reports of IP-based blocking are true, that is not a reliable workaround going forward.

Pi-hole this. OPNsense that. How come FreshTomato doesn’t get any love? :cry: It’s an easy solution for home users.

You can turn a $100 home router into a flexible device with advanced networking functionality. No need for an extra computer or VM.

Simple - you need one of those “Broadcom based routers” instead of any generic Intel/AMD x64 platform for OPNsense. Of course my OPNsense is my Internet router and not an extra computer.

Yes, probably another great open source project, just like e.g. OpenWRT. I just mentioned what I am familar with. Also I am an active contributor to OPNsense.

It’s even in the pihole docs:

https://docs.pi-hole.net/guides/dns/unbound/

I have tried a DNS rewrite for update.ixsystems.com/ pointing to 136.0.77.2. This IP is different from the one given to me by the DNS provider. It has been provided to me by ChatGPT.
And at least from Spain it works. My TN server already checks for updates.
I have done the rewriting with ad-guard home. I have had to configure the TN network so that it uses as a DNS server the IP of the TN server itself where ad-guard home is as a docker application.

Edit:
For download.truenas.com I had to use another IP. Specifically 169.150.225.83.
This is the complete list of IPs:
||•|136.0.77.2 (Estados Unidos) |
||•|185.244.226.2 (Alemania) |
||•|45.43.153.2 (Global, Anycast) |
||•|169.150.225.57 (Japón) |
||•|169.150.225.83 (Japón) |

For a single IP address you could also have added a static hosts entry.

Correct and totally agree. But I took advantage of the fact that I already had ad-guard home installed to do the tests from there.

I’ll donate my resources. Let me know how I can help! :slight_smile:

I have had problems with the correct download of the application icons from Spain.
It seems that this is the same problem of blocking IPs. I have added another DNS rewrite for the domain media.sys.truenas.net to the IP 136.0.77.2.
Now the icons are displayed correctly. If someone else has this problem they can modify their hosts file or use a rewrite with Pi-hole or ad-guard.

We’re pleased to announce that the latest TrueNAS 25.04 ISO and update files are now available thanks to our friends at FOSSTorrents!

If you’re from an area being impacted by IP blocking, try reaching the download URLs below.

I have used airvpn for some time now. It seems reliable and (I believe) very privacy focussed.

I am now seeding the 25.04.2.3 torrent from FOSS

Will seed these and all additional releases.

As much as I would like to voice my opinions on our government’s internet safety policies, the UK arresting an average of 30 people a day for ‘offensive’ online communications gives me concern to bite my tongue.

This Brit expat thanks you for the Hansard link!

Update 2: Electric Boogaloo: FOSSTorrents appears to be having difficulty with their hosting/DNS provider. We’re working on another solution.

I have a 12.875 ratio on my seeding of the Scale 25.04.2.3 ISO.

Its prooving fairly popular.

Is there anything else you particularly wanted seeded?
