Upgraded to 25.04 from 24.10 - fails to boot

Performed an in-place upgrade within the web UI - changing train from TrueNAS SCALE ElectricEel 24.10 [release] to TrueNAS SCALE Fangtooth 25.04 [release].

Default GRUB entry set to 25.04.0:

Resulting in error: checksum verification failed:

Resulting in Kernel panic:

On restart, changing GRUB to use 24.10.2.1 restores the system to a functioning state.

This is a on a HPE ProLiant MicroServer Gen10 - BIOS 5.12.

Have you tried to do a clean 25 install to a USB / external drive and boot from that, loading your config to see if that works?

No, I have not.

I think I ran into this once. Try turning off secure boot in the BIOS.

I too had this same problem upgraded via web ui to 25.04 rebooted and no web interface.
Set back to 24.10.2.1 and all good again.

i have a similar issue with HP Proliant ML310e GEN8>
When booting 24.10.2.1 ( Fresh Install) it is all ok
When booking 25.04.0 (Fresh install) I get middleware unable to start

i have tried to delete the log files but this is a new install so the log file should be small

This is the log from journalctl -xeu middlewared.service

middlewared not starting is an issue for me and several others. I don’t work for iX, but I suggest you review this bug report: Jira

FWIW, I get the same python messages.

Hi @Kelly_Leavitt, @craigywsm
Did you find the solution for middlewared issue?

I just upgraded TrueNAS Scale from 24.10.1 to 24.10.2 and got the same issue shown by @craigywsm in the screenshots, with the same Python messages.

I tried looking on Jira ticket suggested by @Kelly_Leavitt ,NAS-135520, but get an message “You don’t have access to this ticket.”

Looking for jira tickets about middlewared bring some old ones, did not find there sufficient inputs

I had no problems when I updated to 24.10.2. I had a problem once I tried to get to 25.04. I have been informed that there are a lot of changes to the middlewared startup coming in the next 25.04 release (due 5/27/2025).

In the mean time, you could try to delete or rename fhe files in /audit and then doing the upgrade to 24.10.2

Thank you so much!
renaming files in /audit helped.

For my instance this is now fixed by upgrading to 24.10.2.2 and then upgrading to 25.04.1

The latest release 25.04.01 worked. I’m now up to date.

Just to update - this appears to have been caused by a failing (now failed) boot SSD.

Hi, my boot load is an SSD too. With 24 versión truenas work normally, but after install 25 versión I have an error, not boot-load found. So im stuck. How did you solved It? Thanks so much for any help.

I replaced the failed SSD, installed the latest version, and restored the config from backup.
