USB & SD Card seen as UNKNOWN Type

I have tested with a USB SD card reader, a USD Thumb Drive, and a Micro SD Card, all show as unknown, and they wont let me make a pool

Why are you trying to make a pool on a SD card?

Because as of right now that is the largest disk I have available (128 GB) I have a 2 TB ssd, but I use that for my main computer

Then why don’t you try explaining, in complete sentences and paragraphs, what you’re trying to do and what’s happening when you try? Take a look at this to get an idea of the kind of information that would help us help you:

I would like to know how to get my drive as known, Also, would this have effect on me needing to check “force” when making a VDev pool?

Yes, a single drive pool will be challenged in the TrueNAS GUI, but not a big deal to answer the questions.

As for the USB based boot drive, I have tried to use an SD card and failed. I didn’t spend a lot of time on it but I was fine with a failure, it was only a test.

You have not provided any information about your system, and at times it is crucial to know these things.

Based on the lack of information you have provided I have to draw my own assumptions that you are probably using a laptop to test out TrueNAS, or some less than server quality hardware.

If you are just trying to test out TrueNAS to get a feel for what it can do, then create a VM using something like VirtualBox and you can play with it.

If you are looking to actually make a system, do not use SD or Flash Drives of any kind. These are the wrong type of media and your system, if it works, will suffer.

Until we know your hardware, it will be difficult to give you any more advice.

I’m guilty of that as well and sometimes just because someone tells me that it can’t be done. Really made me laugh.

Correct, I am using a old 6yr laptop to test it out, With 12GB of ram, i3-1215u, and intel UHD 620 graphics, I am planning on getting a proper 512gb-1tb ssd for truenas, My old use for true nas right now, is to play around with it and install Linux VMs on it.
