Updated to 25.04.2 and I have VMs back. Does anyone know the current plans for VMs? Am I safe to start using them again or are they planning on more changes?
Did you read the blogpost? It may answer your questions…
I did. It says it’s back but it does not talk about future plans that I saw. I had a Windows VM before that went away. Before I set one back up, I wanted to check about future plans with VMs.
As far as we know at this point, the libvirt backend came back to stay… But my magic crystal ball is away for maintenance so my ability to see into the future is pretty clouded right now…
Thanks! Sometime some of the people around here pay far more attention then most and have read posts elsewhere about future plans and such.
The plan is to ship “enterprise-ready” VMs in 25.10 and it will be libvirt based. So libvert-based VMs created in 25.04.02 onwards should transition, just like all non-incus-based VMs created prior to 25.04.
In the meantime, we’ve been asked to report on any issues we’re encountering with their present VM system so they can improve it.
Did not get far. Will not boot to the Windows ISO, when I press a key to boot to it, it just cycles. Back to it. Going to try and look up what I did wrong, I am sure it’s a setting or something.
It’s nuts how easy Parallels makes it to install a windows VM and how tricky it was when I tried to do same under CORE. Back then, I thankfully had @yorick to hold my hand to get through the process (with all its weird quirks) via a YouTube video.
Given the number of changes under the hood with VMs in the last three (?) editions of SCALE, the scope / quality of VMs that address a libvert-based Windows VM may be low. But I’d have a look.
