VNC Mouse pointer divergence

Hi,

I must be doing something wrong here as after searching this forum and internet cannot find a solution.

Using a VNC client, and I’ve tried lots, the same issue. The mouse pointer and its actual focus is aligned when moving to the top left of the screen - as you move the mouse the divergence between the actual focus (you see this as icons are highlighted) and the actually mouse point grows, so the desktop becomes unusable.

I’m on MacOs and tired this on iPad and linux clients all the same.

Any one know how to fix please - thank you!

p.s. (spice on web is just too flaky)

VNC for VMs was never intended to actually use them, IMHO. Only for installation.

RDP is built into Windows and vastly superior. The server is available for Linux, too as the xrdp package.

If you need an RDP client in your browser Apache Guacamole does that.

Seems strange VNC not intended for generally use? Obviously built into the VM capability so you can see initialisation/boot as well as the desktop.

I’ll try the RDP solution as well to see if that deals with the desktop side of things.

Thanks for replying, appreciated!

The VNC in TrueNAS as in similar KVM based VM hosts connects not directly to a VNC server running in the guest OS but to an emulated “VGA” plus keyboard plus mouse console. Hence all the limitations.

With a remote access protocol connecting directly into the guest OS you gain

  • precise mouse control
  • correct keyboard mapping
  • copy & paste
  • sound to your local machine
  • mapping of folders from your local machine into the remote guest OS
  • mapping of USB devices and printers …

HTH,
Patrick

very helpful - installed xrdp and smooth as butter - thank you!

The official Microsoft RDP client for MacOS is actually very good too.

It is. But xrdp is the server side for Linux if it’s not Windows you want to connect to.

That is hugely useful to know because I will be setting up Proxmox soon with some Linux VMs and I knew I’d need something like that. Thanks!

My VNC works well but I know exactly what you mean.

I always load the virtio drivers so maybe that’s the difference .
The Spice driver gets loaded with that install and the spice client also works well.

The only reason I would use xrdp today would be to have remote SOUND in a Linux system.

Agree used it before but now eliminiated Windoes from my home!

That’s what don’t understand on my setup why VNC and Spice causes me so many problems - I’ve tried multiple clients on different OS’s and devices.

RDP Works well so will stick with that for now
