What is (currently) a sane amount of cold spares?

You’re right! That was my mistake to call LLMs AI. From now on I will only refer to them as LLMs, not AI. :slightly_smiling_face:

Would you like to learn more about LLMs and how they’re making advancements in AI?

My good sir or madam, I rarely use this abbreviation since I am old and mean it when I type it. But I lol(-’d) at that, as the kids would say. I tip my proverbial hat to you!

I have a similar Problem, I can’t wait until the LLM/AI Bubble pops and I can buy again HDD’s which are not 2x the price 10 Years ago. I have a degraded RaidZ1 Pool due to read errors  and no spare money for a HDD.

Not sure if this bubble will pop as the large data centers are buying up all the resources while getting discounts and lower rates than us pebs. Companies are making massive sales in one deal versus appeasing the masses. The only way to stop it is to stop using AI services, since they will integrate it and make it SAAS for all. You also have big gov investing in it for who knows what.

Its like an insurance for them. Even if AI pops, consumers will be forced to be their customers for data storage by having no other choice.

I forgot it was 4 passes for badblocks - but at least my cold spare is looking functional.

I’m glad we’re going back towards a decade where home computing will be absolutely unimaginably expensive for the average family. I guess I’ll start preserving my data by hand, punching 0s and 1s into cards like my forefathers. :frowning:

Risk of unavailability is greater than the risk of higher cost. That’s the part most of us are not thinking.

I’d argue that those are both one & the same. I feel that if the price hits a certain threshold then it may as well not exist.

Agreed on the scenario you explained, but consider this.

You need a 10TB disk and checks the market for it. The price tag did not go up (compared to previous month), but when you try to place the order, you are told the disk will not arrive for next 2 months.. or even worse… they expect to deliver it in 2 weeks, but not very sure if that can be fulfilled and may extend indefinitely still the stock arrives. Now you placed the order, made the payment but the disk is not delivered even after a month… you do have the option to cancel the order and get a full refund, but gets no disk. (something similar to what you might have seen for some items during 2019 pandemic)
