I’m really keen on getting “Windows XP” and “Windows Vista” virtual machines up and running on my “TrueNAS SCALE” system, but I’m hitting some roadblocks. Is this kind of setup even possible? The bootable ISO file simply isn’t being detected
I’ve already tried various settings and things, including swapping out ISO files and manually adding “AHCI” and “VirtIO drivers”, but no luck so far. Either I’m doing something wrong, or the issue lies elsewhere.
Has anyone encountered a similar challenge and found a working solution? Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated!
Got me curious, and found something really interesting. To try it, do this.
Go into your apps, hit Discover apps. Custom app button has the 3 dots menu, install from yaml. Go here, copy the yaml code and paste in the custom app box.
It’ll take a few seconds to kick in, then you hit (truenashostname:8006) from your browser. You should wait a little then see a windows setup screen that then downloads 11 from Microsoft’s site. Step through the installer and see what happens. I’m trying it now.
Quick follow up. That thing WORKS. No complaints about TPM or Secure Boot. It downloaded 11 and ran it like a champ. I turned the app off after running windows update but this is definitely a cool option for anyone who needs access to win11 on a truenas box. Super, super easy to get running.
I can confirm Is working for me too, really a nice catch, thanks for share It!
Just set a couple of environment variable into the YAML and the installation go automatic.
I have to admit i’m not using a licence key, but rdp Is default activated, and i hope It will work anyway… Using a classic VM in this condition prevent to rdp into the machine.
Sweet, updated your sig too.I would never open RDP to the internet, bots scan for it all day and night, there are better ways in. But glad it worked for you, I was surprised something that cool was just get and go. Still want to run XP and 7 for fun eventually.
