On this week’s TrueNAS Tech Talk, Kris and Chris dig into the pull request for the upcoming ZFS AnyRaid feature, which will allow mixed drive sizes to be used in a pool. Find out how “Tiles” will enable increased flexibility when building a pool, and whether or not it’s the right fit for your requirements. TrueNAS 25.04.2 makes it out the door, bringing back Virtualization Classic, including Secure Boot for VMs and custom cloud-sync endpoints. Finally, viewer questions come in for admin account and space reporting challenges, as well as a long-awaited firmware flash to fix a noisy fan on a popular transcoding card.

I’ve used the passthrough technique to update firmware before, notably Intel and Samsung PCIe SSDs. Not GPUs though… but with TPM support its now time to setup a utility Win11 VM ![]()

I would very much like to pass my Ryzen 4650G’s APU to my Win 11 utility Vm but that’s never worked for me, in part due to the reset but I think but it has also never worked on first boot😅
Given that:
- Enterprise customers pay the bills
- Enterprise customers will not have asked to be able to use a bunch of random used drives that they have hanging around
Then why spend valuable staff time integrating a feature like AnyRAID? Sure it might be useful for some homelabbers but not for the users who actually pay for this product.
This feels like it could be a repeat of the virtualisation shambles.
TrueNAS serves a different type of user from those who might be more attracted to other systems such as unRAID/Synology/QNAP so there’s no need to try to compete with those setups.
As far as i understood it, iX isn’t the one who developed anyraid. It’s HexOS that does it.
That’s why I wrote “integrating”.
Integrating AnyRAID into TrueNAS requires development effort, just as was required for Incus.
first it has to get integrated into openzfs, then it will get integrated into truenas. But it won’t be more work then integrating raidz expansion, which afaik also isn’t targeted towards enterprise use, but it still landed in truenas…
And HexOS.
