That website is a blast from the past, and not really in a good way.
Still, I wish them the best on their endeavour.

So much for “TrueNAS is open-source,” I guess.

It may help some readers to know that the middleware repo is not only for CORE. It’s also explicitly for:

  • SCALE; and
  • Enterprise.

Given the understandable focus on SCALE and Enterprise – and the numerous active branches:

– I’m not entirely surprised that truenas/13.3-u1-stable, which is not amongst the seventy-eight branches above, was not entirely free from Enterprise-related files.

is a wonderful thing.

In 2022, the co-founder of FreeBSD wrote:

… The last mistake that I’ll own up to is not pushing much much harder for Linux as our base OS much earlier, …

A wonderful thing, I guess.

Wait, he wanted run run a base OS on top of a base OS? Or am I not understanding.

Where did he say this?

No, this was Jordan Hubbard (Former iX CTO and co-founder of FreeBSD) talking about the ill-fated FreeNAS 10. He was referring to the mistake of keeping it on FreeBSD to begin with and trying to run Linux inside of a bhyve VM. He has written and talked about this on Reddit and other places, where he regrets they didn’t just make the push to switch the base FreeNAS OS to Linux, as we did with SCALE and now Community Edition.

He’s been pretty outspoken about the fact that FreeBSD had its day and its no longer viable in the long term war against Linux. Turned in his FreeBSD commit access many years ago as well. (Hope I’m not putting words in his mouth in summary here).

That clarifies things.

decides not to start the never ending conversation all over again

Real quick. FreeBSD vs Linux. Which one’s better?

All I know is that the red one goes quicker.

jordanhubbard comments on RE-Evaluating TrueNAS from the Historical Perspective…

… TL;DR: To borrow a line from the late, great Douglas Adams: Just keep banging the rocks together, guys!

Jordan Hubbard - Faces of Open Source

The first proper release of zVault could have been an opportunity to thank iXsystems for what it did – and does – for users of FreeBSD.

It is always unsettling when one of the Project’s founding members decides to move on, but Jordan’s interests have migrated away from FreeBSD-related projects and he has decided to hang up his bit once and for all.
