Hey everyone,
I’m pretty much settled now on my periodic snapshot tasks thanks to a nice youtube video, here is a screenshot:
But now, i’m having some troubles understanding replication settings fully, specifically the snapshot retention policy and periodic snapshot tasks.
I “think” I want to select my daily snapshot task w/ 2 week retention for “Periodic snapshot tasks” and for “Snapshot retention policy” select custom and do 6 months.
So in the above scenario, does this mean that if my single storage drive were to die, I could replace it, and when I do a replication restore there are no dates to pick from. It just restores the latest snapshot it has. And after it’s restored, the snapshots will have the 6 month daily snapshot history (and all other snapshots, for example weekly snapshots, will not exist anymore).
If I check the box “Full FIlesystem Replication” I believe that backs up ALL snapshots, but then I cannot set a custom “snapshot retention policy”. What does this mean after you restore in terms of available snapshots to truenas?
Would you do:
- Full filesystem replication + same as source snapshot retention policy + daily periodic snapshot task w/ 2 week retention
or
- Unchecked full filesystem replication + 6 month custom snapshot retention policy + daily periodic snapshot task w/ 2 week retention
If possible, please let me know why too so I can better understand. I’m also open to other ideas because i’m not fully understanding this so there may be a much better setting to do. My mind is stuck on setting the daily periodic snapshot task but the retention period is so short…but maybe i’m thinking of this wrong.
Thank you all.
