Setting up Replication Task creates new Snapshot Task instead of using existing

Hey there!

I set up three Periodic Snapshot Tasks the other day. Now I want to replicate the snapshots that these tasks create.

My problem: Whenever I’m trying to run that new Replication Task for the first time, it seems to create a new Periodic Snapshot Task with default schedule values. I find that pretty annoying because it creates clutter in my Tasks management.

I’m pretty confident, I created the Replication Tasks with the correct values and chose the correct Snapshot Task in the “Periodic Snapshot Tasks” field. “Replication Schedule” is set to “Run Automatically” so the Replication Task should start right after that referenced Periodic Snapshot Task" is finished, right?

So why does it create a new Snapshot Tasks instead of using the existing one?

Did you find out why? I have the same issue.

Yeah same here. The documentation hub seems to have an answer, but its REALLY poorly explained. I think it will take some experimentation to figure out exactly. But it looks like it has something to do with defining the replication as “scheduled”???

“When using the wizard, TrueNAS automatically creates the periodic snapshot task and then runs the replication task.”

" 1. Create a periodic snapshot task using the replication wizard Replicate Custom Snapshots replication option. If scheduling a task, TrueNAS creates the periodic snapshot task when it runs the replication task according to the scheduled time."

I wish there were more gurus here answering questions like this - kinda sad how old this question is with no responses. I guess stuff like this is supposed to be “obvious”.

Have you let that initial replication run?

If yes, does it clean up that snapshot task afterwards?

I am guessing that the replication wants an initial image (snapshots) to base future (incremental) replications off of.

It works for me now after I configured it like this:

Selecting “Matching naming schema” and adding the “auto-%…” schema did the trick. You need to create those “auto-%…” snapshots before configuring replication.
