Add external and allow other computers to see data?

I would like to connect an external drive for backups to TNAS but also allow me to plug that external into other computers and se the data, is that possible?

Yes - providing that the other computers can read ZFS

In practise that really means - not really. TrueNAS only talks ZFS, which means that any disk plugged into it will need to be ZFS which means that any computer you plug the drive into will need top be able to read ZFS

I was thinking that, just thought I would check. Thanks!!

Not only would you need a PC with an OS that can read ZFS “out of the box”, more or less, but you’ll need to have familiarity with the command-line. You won’t have the same level of user-friendliness that TrueNAS offers.

You will also need to understand that once you start writing anything to the “backup” ZFS pool, it can no longer serve as a backup destination for your main pool on TrueNAS. (Unless you’re willing to undo and lose all the changes you made to the backup the next time a replication runs.)

See the last flowchart in this post.

Should you use a Mac, the ZFS implementation for Mac OS is robust enough in my experience. I use ZFS formatted drives regularly.

I will never willingly use an Apple product HA. I am good.

Me neither!
