I have a jbod NAS setup. An 8 disc Raid0. Some of the biggest drives are USB. I have a 14TB NAS drive coming later today, just 1 as that’s all I could afford. I intend to use the 14TB drive for the NAS and the two 5TB USB drives as backup.
I know how to remove individual drives but want to know the best way to transition to the new drive. If I plug the 14TB drive into the NAS and go to the other drives and click remove there is no way to make the system put the data onto the 14TB drive first. I know it will use it but it will also put some onto the other drives. I know as I remove the other drives more and more goes on the 14TB drive but doing it this way will take quite a while.
My question is this. Can I click on multiple drives and select “remove” at the same time or is this not recommended?
There is another choice, set up a new pool with just the 14TB drive, then replicate from old pool to new pool, then delete the old pool. You can even rename the new pool to the old pool name afterwards iirc.
This involves less data movement but I don’t know the commands, Stux wrote about it…
