Advice Needed for drive Upgrade

I have a jbod NAS setup. An 8 disc Raid0. Some of the biggest drives are USB. I have a 14TB NAS drive coming later today, just 1 as that’s all I could afford. I intend to use the 14TB drive for the NAS and the two 5TB USB drives as backup.

I know how to remove individual drives but want to know the best way to transition to the new drive. If I plug the 14TB drive into the NAS and go to the other drives and click remove there is no way to make the system put the data onto the 14TB drive first. I know it will use it but it will also put some onto the other drives. I know as I remove the other drives more and more goes on the 14TB drive but doing it this way will take quite a while.

My question is this. Can I click on multiple drives and select “remove” at the same time or is this not recommended?

I don’t really understand your layout here.

You have 8 disks, some are external, and they are in a raid0 pool with single disk vdevs?

If that’s the case, you cannot remove any drives, and :scream:

Are you using TrueNAS?

Yes you can remove drives. You go into the system and click remove. I already did it with one drive before. I am using TrueNAS

You plugin the new drive, replace one of the usb drives with that new drive via the gui, wait for resilver then disconnect the old drive.

That way you do not lose redundancy.

So you’re saying do them one at a time?

Raid? That looks like a pool made up of a bunch of single width mirrors ie stripe. That fits with being able to remove the disks.

Just remove the disks in order of size from small to large. And when I did this the other week I could only remove one disk at a time.

OK, makes sense

There is another choice, set up a new pool with just the 14TB drive, then replicate from old pool to new pool, then delete the old pool. You can even rename the new pool to the old pool name afterwards iirc.

This involves less data movement but I don’t know the commands, Stux wrote about it…

Edit: Cloning pools? - #6 by Stux

When you say replicate is there a way to copy across the files? Is that an option in the GUI. I don’t know much about NAS.

Had a quick look but I think safest way is to remove one at a time. I know what I’m doing with that method.
