I’ve transitioned my storage needs from a WD pr4100 running the WD Cloud OS to a TrueNAS device. I’d like to backup the TrueNAS to the pr4100 but I’d like to avoid installing TrueNAS on that device. Can I mount the pr4100 as an SMB share and do a weekly automated backup of the changes?
You can back up with rsync tasks (under the Data Protection page). You don’t even need to mount SMB share.
As the owner of a PR4100 myself, I wonder why you don’t want to. I haven’t installed truenas on it yet, though.
Thanks, swc-phil!
I currently have my pr4100 backing up to an Ex2 Ultra using WD’s Remote Backups app. That works, so I’d rather not mess with that.
I’ll report back on my success. Thank you, again.
Do I have to use SSH or is this something I can do from the GUI?
Gotcha. You won’t be able to make use of zfs replication, unfortunately. While rsync seems to support incremental backups, I doubt it’s nearly as functional as zfs snapshots are. And I doubt these backups would have integration with windows file explorer’s version history.
OTOH, even if you deploy truenas on pr4100, you would still need to set up an rsync backup from truenas@pr4100 to mycloudos@ex2.
Yes, you can – Configuring Rsync Tasks | TrueNAS Documentation Hub. Didn’t try it myself. I’ve only used rsync to copy data from mycloud to truenas (and I made it via ssh at pr4100).
