I want to transfer all my data from an Asustor NAS to a new Truenas Scale server within the same home network. When I try and copy the files between the two servers with a computer on the network, files do not carry over, some do most big one don’t. Since it is a large amount of data it is not practical to go through every folder to see if they transferred. What is the best and simplest process to get this done. Appreciate any help I can get, please provide some details or references as I am not as skilled as you!. Thanks
Hello @beckett –
There’s lots to troubleshoot here.
- Are you using a Windows PC to attempt to do the file transfer?
- I would assume that you have an SMB share configured on server 1, server2, and Windows PC? And from the Windows PC, you are trying to copy all of your files from server 1 to server 2?
- What kind of errors are you getting when attempting the copy? If any?
SImpliest way would be to install Double commander.
Map both drives to the computer, navigate to the top level of both the original and the copy data, and select each folder in the list by pressing space. The folders get red and Double commander calculates their sizes.
(This will take some time, depending on the underlying data amount.)
Do it on both datasets.
Then you can compare line-by line, whether all folders are copied, and the data amount is the same in each folder.
Since, you told that all small files are successfully copied, the size-difference in the folders where something is missing, will be obviously visible.
IN those folders then you can go deeper and repeat the selection.
Rinse and repeat until all folders are the same size.
I forgot to indicate I use Fedora 41 (no Windows) with an attached external drive with all the data I want to transfer, and use Dolphin to move it over to to Truenas thru SMB. I installed Truenas Scale in Proxmox with hardware pass through no issues. I have been unable to figure out how to rsync between the two servers (Truenas and Asustor NAS) to complete the task. I understand that SMB might be the reason large files are not transferred even though it indicates successful transfer after the operation is complete. I am hitting my technical limits but soldier on. Thanks for your attention and feedback.
Double commander is multiplatform. It is available for WIndows, Linux and even Mac.
