Big truenas crash

Hello,

Running Scale 25.04.2.4, everything was fine. I saw there was a Plex update, I launched the update as usual and… boom, crash, no more truenas. I plugged in a display, right after boot it says there is a sector error on hdd0 and stops booting after a few other error messages (cannot mount the root volume etc…).

HOPEFULLY, I can still choose 25.04.2.3 in grub, and it boots successfully.
I’m not sure what to do here… is it possible to run a check/fix disk from the 25.04.2.3 partition, then try to re-upgrade to 25.04.2.4? If the boot disk (nvme) is not dying of course, bought it new a few months ago.
Or what else? Wipe the whole disk, reinstall 25.04.2.4 and re-import config export? My last config export is from 25.04.2.3.

Whatever I do, I think I’ll start backuping everything I can on external disks.

Thanks.

“sector error on hdd0” strongly suggests it is in fact dying. Get a fresh boot device, install TrueNAS to it, upload your saved config.

Yep, ordered a new nvme, and started backuping on usb disks… will take a couple of days. My bad, I had bought a PNY… ordered a Crucial now.

Recovery went fine. Disassemble, install the new nvme boot drive, reinstall 25.04.2.4, upload the backup config file, and done. This is is quite robust, good news. ALWAYS do your backups.
