Budget home Truenas new build?

Current setup =

Most recent TruNas Scale running on a HP compaq 8200 elite small form factor pc with Intel i5-2440 3.10ghz , 8 gig ram ( 2x4TB HD = 4 TB raid ) and 150GB SDD for OS and Cache.
This setup has ran for about 8 year’s solid and going through many version of TruNas ( first core then migrated to scale )
Mainly a media server for PLEX and file storage

I am looking to upgrade to 3 or 4 drive raid with increased drive size …
One thought was pull current board and put it in a new case with a 4 port SATA PCI card to run the raid ?

or build a new machine … (looking for transcoding I also have the full PLEX pass ) again this will be a media server with PLEX and maybe JellFin plus a file share .
If I build a new machine I know Supermirco, ASrock , Gigabyte is typically what I see suggested for TrueNas motherboards but I would want this to be a budget build.
I was looking at possible doing something like this board
https://pg.asrock.com/MB/Intel/B760M%20PG%20Lightning%20WiFi/index.asp
( if not this one or another or brand you may suggest )
With an Intel Core i5-12400F , 32 GB ram , 1 TB m2, 3x8 for an 8T raid
( not sold on this card just found a good deal )
Thanks for any help /direction,
John

Then whatever motherboard you find for a good price which has enough SATA ports.
Transcoding => Intel CPU with iGPU, so not a ‘F’.

so a Intel Core i5-12600K would work ?

Yes, and you may drop the ‘K’, but don’t get an ‘F’ if you want an iGPU.

anyone see any issue with the board ?
Thanks again for input

Gamer board. No ECC. Only 4 SATA ports (6-8 would be better for a NAS). Single x16 CPU slot rather than x8 + x8, which is more useful in a server. Realtek 2.5G LAN. Useless audio and WiFi.
Nothing that I personally would pick for a NAS build. But it should work.

I am planning for only 3/4 dirve raid … and will use the M2 slot for os and cache.
sound and wireless will not really be needed on this device (current box doesn’t have them  )
Thanks again …

But… If Is a budget build do you have considered server grade used parts instead?

I will say when you pick a case, get one that supports twice as many drives as you are currently planning on using. I failed that and am going to end up swapping into a different case because I want to add 3 more drives.

I too went with a budget build. I already had a pair of 8tb drives and two sticks of 16gb RAM so I picked up a case, B550 motherboard, 5600G cpu, pair of 128gb m2’s (mirrored for the OS) and a pair of 500gb 2.5" ssd’s (mirrored for apps). My one regret…the case.
