hello, i was recently thinking about building a nas server for data storage (no apps).
id like to ask for an opinion on the hardware ive chosen - more precisely hdds and a controller for them.
hard drive: Seagate Exos 7E8 6TB 7.2K 256MB SAS-3 3.5" ST6000NM0105 - 3 pcs in raidz1
controller: LSI 9207-8i
it wont be running 24/7. ill only power it on to upload or download files and then shut it off.

Is there are reason you are choosing SAS drives and a controller for only three drives instead of just going with SATA drives? Are you planning for more expanison?
Only issue with a HBA is insuring it has the necessary cooling air flow. 200 Linear feet per minute is what is in the documents from LSI / Broadcom
sas hdds are quite cheaper (at least where im gonna buy them).
i have 3 arctic p12 120mm fans in the case (2 intake, 1 exhaust), idk if it’d be enough
You might be better going with four drives in Raid-Z2 or just keeping a spare drive on hand. I don’t know how quickly you could replace a failed drive on Raid-Z1 or if you have your data backed up elsewhere.
I think you should be okay. Check the firmware on your HBA. You can post the results back here using the preformatted text option, </> on toolbar, and get advice if it needs an update. This will also verify that it is in ‘IT Mode’

If this is going in a tower case then it very much depends on where the airflow is.
I would suggest that an LSI card, not in a rack mount case probably needs one of the following - either a small 40mm fan stuck (in some manner) directly to the LSI chip heatsink on card OR a large fan positioned above the slots so it can cool all the slots.
Today I replaced the 8 cm fan with a 12 cm one.
Chieftec Mesh ProCube CI-02B-OP is the case.

Is fine, just slap or ziptie something directly onto the hba if you can
do i have to replace failed drive immediately? i thought i can just shut the system down, order a new drive a replace it when it arrives.
That’s fine, if you power off and then replace when the ordered drive shows up.
