Cant import pool I/O error. Am I goosed?

Hi,
I have a TrueNAS Scale build with 6*4tb raidz1 array. Last night 1 drive failed and when I came to replace it noticed that the pool was “exported”
I have tried importing the pool through SSH but constantly receive I/O errors.
I have attempted an import with the original disks. With faulted Disk removed and with a new Disk replacing the faulted one. All resulting in an I/O error. I did some smartcl reads on my drives which I have attached and noticed some funky stuff but I don’t understand it all.

If anyone can help that would be greatly appreciated. I had planned to replace all the drives and now I’m left with 20tb of lost data and 6*8tb drives sitting around until I can rule out recovery as a possibility.

Thanks for your help!

admin@truenas[~]$ sudo zpool import -f -F -D -R /mnt MegaDrive

I appreciate the frustration, but please STOP taking any further actions until you receive expert advice on how to proceed, because if the “failed” drive hadn’t actually failed but had dropped out for a different reason, swapping it out might have reduced the chances of bringing the pool back to life.

The first step seems to me to be to verify whether the “failed” drive has actually failed. If you reinstall it, is it visible in Linux, and what does smartctl -x tell you about the drive?

Once we know whether we can use the old drive to assist with pool recovery or if it is truly dead, then we can proceed to try to work out how to bring the pool back online again in a degraded state so that you can either get the data off or recover redundancy by resilvering.

Hi thanks,
Here is the report from sdb the drive that TrueNAS showed as faulted:

That drive looks OK.

Power on hours: 20669 which is c. 2 years 4 months
Reallocated sectors: 0
UDMA_CRC_Error_Count: 0
And you have written less than 8x total disk space.

The power cycle count is very high: 1984 over 20669 hours is once every 10.5 hours - and I have no idea why this would be the case - however I think this is still well within the specified cycle count.

So the drive looks good to me.

My advice would be to put it back in and then we can start to try to work out why the device errored and why the pool dropped out and how to get it back online again.

Once you have put it back in and powered up, please run the following commands and post the output:

  • lsblk -bo NAME,MODEL,ROTA,PTTYPE,TYPE,START,SIZE,PARTTYPENAME,PARTUUID
  • sudo zpool status -v
  • sudo zpool import
  • lspci
  • sudo storcli show all
  • sudo sas2flash -list
  • sudo sas3flash -list

P.S. The other smartctl -x output seems ok too.

Thanks for the quick response.

Here are the outputs you asked for. I saw after sudo ‘zpool status -v’ that it states the pool can be imported which I have never seen before!

Thanks for your help!

The original problem may have been bad SATA cable seating or minor corrosion on the pins.

Putting the original drive back in might have put the lego pieces back together again so it looks to ZFS as if it is importable.

I do not believe that there would be any harm in doing sudo zpool import -R /mnt MegaDrive and see whether it imports.

If it does import, you need to check that all the datasets appear at the correct point by doing ls -l /mnt/MegaDrive/* and then run a Scrub on the pool to check the data integrity.

Hi,
Running that command gives me the same I/O error:

admin@truenas[~]$ sudo zpool import -R /mnt MegaDrive
[sudo] password for admin:
cannot import 'MegaDrive': I/O error
Destroy and re-create the pool from
        a backup source.

Yes, I feared that would be the outcome.

@honeybadger Any chance that you can help??
