Ok, so how do you run a smart test or can’t it be done now
From the cli
smartctl -t long /dev/sdX
Where X is your driveletter
Thanks, I was just going to ask that
It is seemingly running now
smartctl -a /dev/sdX
Will show you the results.
My TrueNAS gui doesn’t stay open for very long and when I checked I was logged out. Logging in again took me to the shell, but no actions or anything were showing How do I stay logged in while the test is running
Just check back on it later. It takes a while depending on the drive size. It will keep running the test in the background on the system.
Ok, but after it has finished where do I find the results of the smart test.
Also via cli or install the scrutiny app for a webui

This tells you how long tests take (assuming an otherwise inactive drive), and smartctl -t returned with the estimated time of completion. Next time, write this down and come back some time later.

Because the disc is degraded and there so many errors, I want to remove it, format it and use for something else.
As TrueNAS won’t let me offline or replace it, can I just disconnect it, as that seems to be the only way I can think of.
Thanks
That amounts to destroying the pool, which may be acceptable if the content is only CCTV records.
![]()
Yes I thought as much but is there a better way
That error usually appears when the pool has no redundancy left. Since your pool only has two disks and one is already failing, TrueNAS won’t let you offline it because there isn’t a valid replica to keep the data safe.
Before removing anything, make sure you back up any important footage. After that, you can shut the system down and replace the failing drive, then use the replace/resilver option to rebuild the pool. If the pool was created without mirroring, you may need to recreate it after swapping the disk.
Ok thanks, but I removed the disk then used the 2Tb disc for the same pool. I then created the datasets as I had before.
The data isn’t or wasn’t important, as it is just local footage around my property
