Crashes at boot right after upgrade

I am in the process of upgrading an old server to latest version. I upgraded TrueNAS from 24.04 to 24.10 then to 25.04 (yes I know I am a year late to this :person_facepalming:) which are the steps towards latest version

It “crashes” right after booting 25.04

This is the last line in the framebuffer console:

`NFSD: Using /var/lib/nfs/v4recovery as the NFSv4 state recovery directory`

Previous lines of log as a photo: litter.catbox.moe/yli4u4.jpg

If I connect to ssh before it crashes, I receive this “broadcast” message in the SSH output:

`2026 Jul 27 03:06:45 kernel BUG at fs/nfsd/nfs4recover.c:534!`

Anyone know how I should proceed? Any help appreciated.

Now I am back on 24.10 and it does boot fine

Some loser dork is going to ask you the irrelevant question: “What’s your hardware bro?”

They might even ask if your boot-pool is installed on a USB stick.

What a bunch of dorks! Not me though. I’m not a dork.

Hardware: Dell PowerEdge R530

boot-pool is on a USB SSD

That’s not all the hardware.

SSD in a USB enclosure?

Did you export the config in the past? Have you tried with a different boot device? Have you tried with a fresh installation? Make sure you have a copy of the exported config and secret seed, especially if you’re using encryption.

Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2620 v4 @ 2.10GHz
56GB DDR4 ECC
If you can be more specific, it would be great, as I am not sure which hardware/information you’re trying to familiarize with

The SSDs are 2x Transcend ESD310 256GB( https://transcend-info.com/product/portable-ssd/esd310 ) RAIDZ mirror

I do have a backup including secret seed from before upgrade, when it prompted me to save one. I also can boot back into working 24.10 at the boot menu.

Thanks.

You mean in as 2-way mirror? (RAIDZ applies to RAIDZ1, 2, and 3)

The easiest step to rule out the version of TrueNAS itself is to do a clean installation of the latest version and load your config to restore your settings, shares, and auto-import your pool.

If a fresh installation does not fix the issue of booting, it could signal an issue with the boot media and/or RAM.

So… It was NFS. I retry upgrade the 2nd time, still crashes on boot. So not a failed upgrade. Then I retry the upgrade to 25.04 again, but before this attempt, I disabled NFS, and this time it worked, no crash on boot. Then I upgraded it to latest 25.10 from 25.04, and re-enabled NFS. No crash.

Not sure if that warrants a bug report. Having the NFS server enabled crashes the entire system before it can boot? Something seems off. NFS is not uncommon as an active server on TrueNAS systems.

like I’ve mentioned, I think it is a kernel bug causing this

`2026 Jul 27 03:06:45 kernel BUG at fs/nfsd/nfs4recover.c:534!`

Plus that version is a year old anyways, latest version not affected.

I wonder if others on 25.04 couldn’t boot because they were using NFS.

You can try to use Report a Bug with your last working version, 24.10? and attach a debug dump. That may give devs a clue as to any odd settings you had before the upgrade. You can also mention the Bug and link you found as they may be able to follow up.

All those versions are pretty well tested at this point with installs and upgrades. It would have been expected to have been caught way earlier or it was not reproducible by the devs.

Not sure if they would be interested in this though, since a newer major version is already out. Is there any way to confirm with the dev if they’re interested? Since I already have latest major release working.

I would just skip the bug report if it’s working, since the versions were a lot older.
